Algonquin College 40th Anniversary |
Construction Almost Completed on New Watertfront Campus!
Labs and classrooms on the third and fourth floor are coming along well. Furniture, shelving, carpeting, and flooring are being completed on the first floor where the Library, Bookstore and Student Commons areas are located. Landscaping is underway, and parking lot paving is almost completed. First-year students and staff participated in the Orientation Games Day at Centenary Park recently and the waterfront setting, with the College in the background, was an excellent welcome for our new local and out-of-town students. We are getting excited about moving soon and the beautiful facility will be well worth the wait. Students and staff are watching for updates on our Move2012 website.

Update: Company Makes Second Donation
Investors Group, a Pembroke-based financial services company, presented Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley with a cheque for $1,000 for the new campus campaign. Mark Jennings, himself an Algonquin College Business Program graduate presented the campital campaign with a $500 donation about a year ago. Several of the Investors Group employees are proud Algonquin College graduates. |
Great Day for Golf as the Community Ccontinues to Support Algonquin College
A hot and humid day didn't stop 140 golfers from supporting Algonquin College's building fund for its new Pembroke waterfront campus. Almost $27,000 was raised at the tournament, while an additional $25,000 commitment to the college's capital campaign was announced by TD Bank, at the start of the tournament. Over the past four years, the golf tournament has generated more tha $100,000 in funds to support the college's fundraising campaign. Wilderness Survival Course Offered to Benefit New Campus
Fred Blackstein, strong College advocate and honorary chair of the Capital Campaign Committee, has offered to teach another session of his Wilderness Survival Skills course. With a minimum $100 donation, participants will learn a variety of practical skills such navigating with map and compass, starting a fire in inclement weather, treating hypothermia, emergency shelters, and much more. |
Royal Canadian Legion Contributes to A Student Bursary Fund
Branch 72 of the Royal Canadian Legion believes that investing in students is investing in the future of Renfrew County. The recent donation they made to Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley will provide financial assistance to Pembroke Campus students through a special Royal Canadian Legion Branch 72 bursary fund. This donation will be matched by the provincial government and the endowed fund will enable local Algonquin students to be awarded an annual bursary in perpetuity.

Federal Grant Assures Facility Accessibility
Enabling Accessibility Fund Announces Grant for New College Campus The federal government, through its Enabling Accessibility Fund, is contributing $3 million to the cost of building the new Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley Campus in Pembroke. The new campus, which will open in the fall of 2012, will feature innovation planning by the architects that will support individuals with mobility issues. Read the media release here. Sports Association Makes Generous Donation
Many local organizations and individuals have offered to help the new campus building fund. The latest organization to make a donation to the Capital Campaign is the Alice and Fraser Minor Sports Association. Construction Starts on New Waterfront Campus
After years of dreaming of having a new campus, construction is finally underway on the new $36 million Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley Campus. Excavation work on the site started with the help of local contractors in late May, paving the way for structural construction by early summer. The College is continuing to work with the city’s planning and building departments as it finalizes the site plan for the new 100,000 square foot building, which will open to students in the fall of 2012. Once completed, the campus will be a showcase for the City of Pembroke, and will re-energize the city’s historic downtown, while also creating new opportunities for local residents and out-of-town students to pursue post-secondary education. |
Sod Turning Signals Start of Construction on New Algonquin College Campus
With great excitement, the official groundbreaking ceremony for Algonquin College's new Pembroke Campus took place on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, on the waterfront site of the new campus. Nearly 400 VIPs and community members were in attendance, including many businesspeople from the city’s downtown core and donors to the College’s capital campaign, who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new campus. Capital Campaign Receives Major Donation at Opening of New Waterfront Pavilion
The Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, who operated the Lorrain School of Nursing from 1926 to 1973 in Pembroke, have made a $100,000 donation to the College’s capital campaign. Through this generous donation, one of the three nursing labs that will be built in the new waterfront campus, will pay tribute to the Lorrain School through a naming opportunity.Read more here and see photos of the new pavilion opening. |
College Unveils Designs for New Waterfront Campus
At a media conference today, Dean Karen Davies shared her excitement about the new Pembroke Campus and the features of the 100,000 square foot facility. There will be three nursing labs, a large student commons area, expanded automotive and outdoor training space, a beautiful two-storey library, and a fitness centre and gymnasium. In addition, with the College's commitment to sustainability, the campus will be built to achieve the Canada Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) - Gold Certificate. CUT-RITE'S "CLOSE SHAVE" RUN SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2011
Molly Van Bavel, owner of Cut-Rite Family Hairstyling & Indulgence Spa is an enthusiastic Algonquin College booster. Not only has she organized a 5K “Close Shave” Run for Sunday, May 15th, but she has also pledged to raise $10,000 for the new campus and will even shave her head when she’s reached her goal. Glam & Glitter Sets Tone for Fundraising Event
Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Cher and Lucille Ball were just a few of the celebrities who participated in Algonquin College's Oscars Night in Pembroke---a major fundraiser for the new Ottawa Valley Campus. More than $25,000 was raised at the event, and the College received an additional donation of $100,000 from the RBC Foundation. $25,000 of the RBC donation will go directly to the campaign to raise funds for the new campus that will be built in downtown Pembroke. More than 140 people attended the Night at the Oscars which was held on the same night as the Academy Awards. The event was co-hosted by The Brick, inside Pembroke's West End Mall. |

New Campus Design Getting Closer Update: The Pembroke Campus of Algonquin College is getting ever closer to a new design. In the next phase of the process, teams of design/ builders are now studying the campus plan and will use it as their guiding document to work on design submissions for the new campus. AECL Union Members Help Project
One of the Ottawa Valley’s largest skilled trades unions has added its support to the plan to build a new Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley Campus. The Allied Council, which represents about 500 skilled trades, transportation and security workers at Atomic Energy of Canada’s Chalk River Laboratories has made a donation to the new capital campaign.

Former Board of Governors' Member to be Honoured
Well-known Pembroke resident Fred Blackstein will receive the William G. Davis Community Volunteer provincial award to recognize his contribution to higher education in the Ottawa Valley. Algonquin College President Robert Gillett remarked on Mr. Blackstein's "outstanding vision, exceptional ability to marshal community resources, and his expertise in managing large, community-based projects". Emergency Services Group Cycles for Donations
Pembroke and Area Emergency Services Staff have participated in a bicycle marathon for several years, raising money for various charitable causes. This year, Algonquin College was the recipient of their generous donation. |
City Council Approves Building of New Pavilion
Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley, with community support, plans to build a new pavilion along Pembroke’s waterfront that will include photographic plaques depicting the history of post-secondary education in Renfrew County. The project was unanimously approved by Pembroke City Council on September 14th. The Ottawa River attracts swimmers and watercraft of all kinds and is a magnificent backdrop for visitors to the City's waterfront. Over the past decade, the milennium boardwalk and waterfront park area have become a hub of social activity, entertainment, and relaxation for both tourists and community residents. Walkers,cyclists, and rollerbladers alike congregate here to take advantage of the scenic waterfront and spectacular sunsets. Read The Daily Observer article here. |
College Staff, Faculty and Retirees Support New Campus
After the initial announcement was made about approval to build a new campus, a number of staff, faculty and even retirees, wanted to become involved too. A committee was formed, events and activities were planned, and a kick-off event took place in February 2009. Since that time, special dinners prepared by the College’s Cook Apprentice program have been held, as well as a raffle for a treasure chest of prizes, and a silent auction. In addition, staff have also participated in the fundraising efforts through donations of a one-time financial gift, or through ongoing payroll deduction donations. |

2nd Annual Golf Tourney Another Success for Capital Campaign
Generosity Was Earthshaking
It was hot and muggy but the rain miraculously held off on Wednesday, June 23rd, when 148 golfers teed off in Pembroke for a good cause. However, the event did create some earth-shaking news when it was announced that over $50,000 was raised for Renaissance Square, Pembroke’s new campus project. This second annual golf tournament attracted golfers from all around the Ottawa Valley, as well as five teams from Ottawa, including three from the Woodroffe Campus. President Bob Gillett had a foursome, as did the Algonquin Foundation and the Students’ Association. The participants raised $25,696 through registrations, silent auction bids and fundraising games at various holes. In addition, Giant Tiger, the largest department store in downtown Pembroke, and future “neighbour” of the new College campus, made a pledge of another $25,000. Next year’s golf tournament has already been scheduled for Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011. |

The campus Capital Campaign committee is thrilled by the success of the College-opoly Tournament where eight tournament teams and several community participants played some friendly games of Monopoly as part of a new campus fundraising goal of $2.5 million. As they move closer to their objective, the Capital Campaign committee continues to plan more events. New Sign Welcomes Algonquin College to Future Site
New Billboard Symbolizes College Commitment to Building New Ottawa Valley Campus A large billboard has been constructed at the future site of the new Algonquin College campus along Pembroke's waterfront, welcoming the College to the City's downtown core. The sign can be seen from Lake Street and from the Kiwanis Walkway, which borders the shoreline of the Ottawa River. Campus Dean, Karen Davies, says the sign is significant in that it symbolizes the firm commitment the College has made to building a new campus to serve the Upper Ottawa Valley. "This is a very exciting project for our College, our community, and Pembroke's downtown and we look to the start of construction in the spring of 2011," says Davies. The new campus will be open in the fall of 2012. The billboard was designed, built, and installed by SunSign Graphics of Pembroke.

New Campus Rezoning Approved by City Pembroke City Council has approved a rezoning application made by Algonquin College that clears the way for the college to build a new Ottawa Valley campus along the city’s waterfront. The property that the college intends to build on has been re-zoned from Central Commercial and Central Commercial Flood Fringe to Institutional and Institutional Flood Fringe.The next step for the college is to enter into an official site plan agreement with the city that will set out the details of the construction plan.
