Construction Almost Completed on New Watertfront Campus!

new campusSeptember 21, 2012 - Classes are underway at the Pembroke Street Campus.  Our new Waterfront Campus is going to be outstanding, but we are going to have a wait a little longer before we can move into the building.

Labs and classrooms on the third and fourth floor are coming along well.  Furniture, shelving, carpeting, and flooring are being completed on the first floor where the Library, Bookstore and Student Commons areas are located.  Landscaping is underway, and parking lot paving is almost completed.

First-year students and staff participated in the Orientation Games Day at Centenary Park recently and the waterfront setting, with the College in the background, was an excellent welcome for our new local and out-of-town students.

We are getting excited about moving soon and the beautiful facility will be well worth the wait.  Students and staff are watching for updates on our Move2012 website.

City Council Approves Building of New Pavilion

Historical Photos and Commentary Will Depict College History

Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley, with community support, plans to build a new pavilion along Pembroke’s waterfront that will include photographic plaques depicting the history of post-secondary education in Renfrew County. The project was unanimously approved by Pembroke City Council on September 14th.

There will be four panels in the pavilion that highlight these topics:  A Century of Training Nurses; Establishing a College for the Ottawa Valley; The Building of a New Waterfront Campus; and Algonquin College Changes with the Times.

The Ottawa River attracts swimmers and watercraft of all kinds and is a magnificent backdrop for visitors to the City's waterfront. Over the past decade, the milennium boardwalk and waterfront park area have become a hub of social activity, entertainment, and relaxation for both tourists and community residents.  Walkers, cyclists, and rollerbladers alike congregate here to take advantage of the scenic waterfront and spectacular sunsets.

The newest pavilion will be located near the Timber Crib along the Kiwanis Walkway, and to the west of the Riverwalk Amphitheatre. College officials believe the pavilion and its historical plaques will help link the waterfront to its new campus which will open in the fall of 2012.  The new pavilion construction will take place in the fall of 2010.

Science Journalist Appeals to All Audiences

Over 500 people gathered at Festival Hall on November 30th to hear Bob McDonald speak about everything under the sun...and the moon too.  The ticket sales along with the generosity of our speaker means the College could put $3,300 in the bank after this event.

The long-time CBC Radio host of Quirks & Quarks, was the guest speaker at Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley's annual lecture series.  McDonald's illustrated presentation was entitled:  “Everything You Know about Science is Wrong--Great Leaps in Scientific Thought.”"

McDonald has won several awards in science journalism for making complex science concepts accessible and understandable to ordinary Canadians through story telling, books, television shows and his weekly radio show.  He also demonstrated this skill in Pembroke, bringing great enthusiasm to his talk, and involving young members of the audience to help with demonstrations.  His presentation was a resounding success with the audience, who ranged from elementary students to scientists, and at the same time, it helped the College with its new campus fundraising efforts.

The College has been hosting a community lecture since 1991, bringing interesting and diverse speakers to Pembroke, including a DNA expert whose topic was about gathering evidence for police investigations, an astronomer, war historian/journalist, nuclear medicine expert, and more.

New Campus Rezoning Approved by City

Pembroke City Council has approved a rezoning application made by Algonquin College that clears the way for the college to build a new Ottawa Valley campus along the city’s waterfront.  The property that the college intends to build on has been re-zoned from Central Commercial and Central Commercial Flood Fringe to Institutional and Institutional Flood Fringe.

The next step for the college is to enter into an official site plan agreement with the city that will set out the details of the construction plan.  The College expects to break ground on the project in April of 2011, with the new campus open to students by the fall of 2012.
