Green Christmas: Heart-felt Ideas for Eco-friendly Gift Giving

For most of us, Christmas and the holidays has become a crazy busy, stressful time of year. It typically involves running around malls full tilt to shop for the perfect gift and nice packaging to match. And, it involves spending a bundle in the process and contributing a considerable amount of waste to our city's landfill site.

Perhaps there a few ways to cut down on excess shopping, wrapping paper, and gift boxes that clutter our environment. Who knows? Maybe this would also allow us to find more of that very rare commodity – time.

Why not think about making some gifts for your friends and family? A gift of your homemade chutney or your hand stamped note cards would be truly treasured and send a more personal message to the lucky recipient. You could pot a piece of your favourite plant for someone who has admired it, or plant a tree in someone’s name at the local park or arboretum.

The gift of time is another perfect gift to give a special someone. You could make a home made gift card that gives a weekend of help to a shut in senior, or babysitting to a new parent, or the sharing of a dinner or movie out with a friend who you never seem to connect with.

Donations to charities are another great way to create a greener holiday while helping others. A personalized donation in a friend’s name for Adopt-a-Child, Save the Whales, the World Wildlife Fund, The Salvation Army, The Shepherd’s of Good Hope, or an environmental organization gives to others less fortunate and lets a friend know that you are thinking of them during the holidays.
