Wow... has it really been almost three decades? The "E Block"... the Rotunda... the Students' Union... lots of memories!

My relationship with Algonquin College dates back to 1983, when I was a direct-entry student into the second year of the two-year Journalism - Print diploma program. We were the last journalism class to use typewriters (computers arrived in the fall of 1984 for those students!) and the first journalism class to produce an actual newspaper.

It took us two full semesters to produce that single edition (working after hours in the Ottawa Citizen's newsroom to do so) and I was proud to be the editor of it. Today's Algonquin journalism students produce a much larger newspaper every two weeks; how times have changed!

I started teaching at the college in 1989 (still teaching that writing course to this day), joined the college full-time as a co-ordinator in 2002 and am now an acting academic manager for the School of Part-time Studies. I love this college, the people (students and staff alike) and am very proud to be part of a community that truly betters our society.

I have many favourite memories of Algonquin and have recently returned to teach in the Paralegal Program. As I walk through the halls to class now, I can hear the laughing and see the group of us as we moved like a cloud from one class to the other.  I still stay in touch with a few friends, Julie, Nancy, Joy and see others around town. I also fondly recall hours and hours watching the Young and the Restless in the lounge.

I have great memories of my field placements - OCDC and Rideau Regional Centre in Smiths Falls. I did not want to do either placement but Syd Ford in his wisdom assigned them to me - he was right, I learned everything I needed to learn.

As I said, I am in my second year teaching in the Paralegal Program on a part-time basis, but during the day you will find me in the Provincial Offences Court in my role as Prosecutor.

I cannot believe it has been 27 years! Seems like yesterday!

Since graduation I have enjoyed success in a variety of different fields; from managing a large scale machine shop for Pulp and Paper equipment to developing manufacturing processes for temperature control systems for satellites.  I am currently a Project Manager for the largest Mining Engineering consulting firm in Thunder Bay.  My work involves working with a team to develop new infrastructure for a variety of mining facility types and mineral resources for projects around the world.

I do miss the Ottawa Valley but my life and work in North-western Ontario is both challenging and rewarding.

Please see my picture for my two greatest achievements.

I am currently working as a Health Nurse on the Pembroke Campus. Right from the start, I knew Algonquin was going to be a wonderful place to work. Being a part of a very dedicated team of people who truly care about the success of each and every student is a very rewarding feeling.

I am happy to hear that Algonquin College will be holding 40th Anniversary celebrations this year, which mirrors my marriage anniversary as well. During my three years at EOIT I was heavily involved in the photographic club and the Scribe. I hope to be able to connect with some of my classmates since our last class reunion was held in 1971.

I enjoyed every moment that I spent at Algonquin and would like to share my experience with others.  I had a great time playing on the basketball team during the
2001 - 2002 season.  There were countless other activities and people to remember during my stay at Algonquin.

One of my favourite Algonquin College memories was taking part in the 2005 Winterlude Kiwanis Bed Race as part of Algonquin College's 5-team contingent.  Our team, the "Marcom Marvels," consisted of staff members from the College's Public Relations/Communications and Marketing Departments, forming an unstoppable* force with which to be reckoned.  While the Marvels did not win the trophy that year (it was actually won by the College's Paramedic program students) I had a terrific time pushing our "hot rod" bed on Dow's Lake in minus 40 degree weather!

*we would have been unstoppable if not for an opponent in an adjacent lane who, moments after the above photo was taken, decided to race in our lane, forcing the mighty Marvels into a dramatic and hilarious spin out.

It is hard to believe it has been over 10 years since I finished my full-time studies at Algonquin. I've enjoyed participating in numerous college events and committees, most notably - the United Way Annual Headshaving challenge. Friendships with classmates and teachers have endured the years and I look forward to connecting with old and new friends at the 40th Anniversary Homecoming Weekend and Gala.

My fondest memory from my time studying in the Public Relations program (Class of '07) was working with all of my classmates to raise over $13,000 for a local charity during the Annual Spring Fundraiser.
