By Catherine Lee, Algonquin Book Club
Have you heard all of the laughing coming from a table of women in the staff caf, every third Wednesday noon ? Have you wondered what they are all doing and why they are having so much fun?
We are the Algonquin Book Club. We meet monthly to share our thoughts about a specific chosen book, or a particular theme. The group was formed during a Kaleidoscope workshop a couple of years ago, and has been meeting as a club ever since. Yes, we do talk about books, but we also talk about a wide variety of topics, and we always seem to laugh and have lots of fun as well. Over lunches and snacks, we go around the table to share thoughts and feelings about the current theme and to recommend favourite books.
The Algonquin Book Club meets again April 15th, May 20th & June 17th. Come join us!
I have a book suggestion that I would like to share.
The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows
This novel is written as a series of letters which combines post-World War II history with fascinating characters, chuckle-out-loud humour, love -- all centred around the activities of an eclectic book club. It begins when Dawsey Adams of Guernsey Island writes to London author Juliet, the former owner of his used book store, asking for her help in finding a used book shop in London. This begins an interesting and amusing correspondence that draws in other island residents as well as some of Juliet’s London friends. The novel is full of post-war tidbits, some dark war history, and unforgettable characters who really come alive. Inevitably, Juliet can’t resist traveling to Guernsey Island to meet her new friends, and sharing many fun stories about their lives and adventures. Highly recommended reading.
