In Praise of Our "Hidden Gems"

By Beth Cameron

picture of man with t-shirt saying "Unsung hero"Our Algonquin colleagues do wonderful, amazing things everyday that make our work lives easier and more enjoyable. Some receive formal recognition through initiatives such as the annual Staff Awards program. However, perhaps there are times throughout the year when you wish to express gratitude to a fellow employee. Could be someone in your own department, from another department or another campus.

This feature is a place to shine a light on the "behind the scenes" unsung heroes whose special actions are perhaps not as visible.

picture of Fred MazanFred Maizan, Physical Resources:  I have observed Fred and found despite the requests and complaints he hears ( and I know because I have given him both) he always remains professional and helpful beyond belief.  I don’t know what I would have done without him in organizing the Summer Academy of the Arts.  He was so incredibly helpful and made my life so much easier due to his assistance.  He also made the College look very  good by the impression he made on the students in the Summer Academy.

picture of Christine ChateleineChristine Chatelaine, CSR, College Switchboard:  In a few words... always smiling and upbeat, generous and giving to all including the needy, acknowledging everyone’s birthdays, showing care and concern for setbacks and illnesses, going the extra mile to help callers and friends. She's a true asset to the College.  Oh, and she organizes a pretty mean pot luck too!  A real team builder.

Hats Off to Our Ride Angels!

A special acknowledgement from the Live Laugh Learn editorial board goes to the many staff and faculty members (too numerous to name) who pulled together during the OC Transpo strike. From drivers, shuttle bus and ride board organizers, lenient parking enforcers, to the donators of coffee and hot chocolate ..... we hail your efforts and commend your spirit of collaboration. A fine example of truly living Algonquin’s core value of caring!
