Algonquin Reads

algonquin reads logoLooking for a new project for your students?  Want to meet people across the college?  Then get involved in a new initiative called Algonquin Reads!  This is a project currently in development by a team of professors, students, managers and staff across the college. It will occur over the 2009-2010 academic year. The idea is to get everyone reading a single work of Canadian fiction and participating in events centred around the book.  You can win prizes if you are caught reading the book around campus, you can attend theatrical renditions of the book, join the online book club or simply vote on whether you like the book!

picture of Reluctant Prophet Book CoverThis year’s book is Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet by Joanne Proulx, a local Ottawa author. It is available for sale at the FirstClass bookstore, and copies will also be available at the Learning Resource Centre.

The working group is looking for more ideas from the college community on additional events for this project. For instance, graphic design programs could assist in creating posters for this project, event management students could help develop events across the college, documentary production could create a documentary on literacy – and much more. If you have an idea, or want to get involved, please contact Helena Merriam at merriah@algonquincollege.com or at extension 5338.
