We continue to have fun and engage people through the Algonquin Reads project for the Winter term.
The Algonquin Reads committee hosted a bookbinding workshop, where staff and students learned how to create a beautiful handmade book, using a longstitch technique. Mary McIntrye, President of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild – Ottawa Valley Chapter came in with supplies and equipment, and two hours later, everyone left with a handmade book.
On March 8, 2010, Joanne Proulx, author of Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet, came to do a reading and answered questions about the writing process. It was a great session, very engaging, entertaining and informative. Students from a Canadian literature class, Library and Information Technician program, and Professional writing program were in attendance, along with faculty and staff from around the college.
Finally, Algonquin Reads launched a Student Writing Contest, encouraging submissions from students for two categories, Critical Essay and Creative Writing. The deadline for submission is Monday March 22 at 4pm, and there is a limit of 1000 words. The winners will receive $150 prize and a possibility of publication in Algonquin Times.
The submissions are starting to come in – please encourage your students to enter!
