picture of Terry AndersonTerry Anderson, Athabasca University

Terry Anderson is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Distance Education at Athabasca University - Canada’s Open University. He has published widely in the area of distance education and educational technology and has co-authored or edited six books and numerous papers. Terry is the Director of CIDER - the Canadian Institute for Distance Education Research (cider.athabascau.ca) and the editor of the International Review of Research on Distance and Open Learning (IRRODL www.irrodl.org).  

Terry is active in provincial, national, and international distance education associations and a regular presenter at professional conferences. He teaches educational technology courses in Athabasca University Master’s and Doctorate of Distance Education programs.

Terry‘s research has focused on interaction and its use and impact in distance education contexts. Beginning with audio-conferencing, he has moved with the technology through studies on videoconferencing, immersive worlds and most recently in application of social software and web 2.0 technologies to distance contexts.  Terry also maintains a keen interest in professional development and especially those forms accessible at a distance.  In 1992, Terry organized the first virtual conference ever held, in conjunction with the ICDE Bangkok conference.

The complete text of Terry’s most recent edited book “The Theory and Practice of Online Learning”, 2nd edition is available as an Open Access resource at http://www.aupress.ca/books/Terry_Anderson.php. This text was the winner of the 2009 Charles E. Wedemeyer Award for the outstanding book of 2008 awarded by the Distance Learning Community of Practice of the University Continuing Education Association. Terry's keynote address entitled Bringing Algonquin Online: Opportunities, Changes, and Challenges – What’s in it for us? will address how our roles are changing and opportunities are emerging as we move forward with online learning at Algonquin College. As well, he will discuss how technology is changing the way we work, communicate, teach, and learn.
