Learning and Sustainability Across the Curriculum

Helen Knibb and Janet Honsberger, Centre for Learning and Teaching, Fleming College

Centre for Learning and Teaching, Centre for Learning and Teaching, Fleming College

Since 2005, when the United Nations announced the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, post-secondary institutions in Europe and North America have been designing infrastructure, policies, plans and buildings that promote campus sustainability. Of all these initiatives, the most significant challenge has been the question of how sustainability concepts can be thoughtfully integrated across the curriculum, given other competing agendas.

This session explores some of the most effective models and practices that have been developed by colleges and universities internationally, including high level college or program outcomes, curriculum frameworks, and discrete courses.  Through guided discussion and group work, participants will examine the merits of these models in order to develop their own ‘next practices’ of value for a specific college or program context and culture.
