Mind Mapping for Active Learning

Ian McVitty, Professor, Hotel & Restaurant Management Program

Ian McVitty

Mind Maps are drawings or pictures of a concept, designed to replicate the way the brains works. They are a great way to balance right brain creativity with left brain order in the classroom.

Their uses are many. They can be used by students to take notes, or by teachers to present complex ideas. This semester, I used them to remember student names, to do a course review, to summarize chapters in a book, and even as a course planning tool. My students used them to present an entire Marketing Plan in 10 minutes....something I had never seen before.  Outside the classroom they can be used to help make decisions, create to-do lists and even find lost objects.

Mind Maps can be learned in a few minutes.  If you would like to see samples, Mind Map software at work, videos of students using them and of course how to draw a Mind Map, join me for a short presentation and be prepared to let your creativity loose.
